Dumi Khan (full name Dumitrița Khan, born October 26, 1995, in Cluj-Napoca, Romania) is a contemporary ceramic artist. She graduated from the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca, completing her BA in Ceramics – Glass – Metal in 2018 and her MA in Ceramics – Glass in 2020, within the Faculty of Decorative Arts and Design.
Her artistic practice focuses on the ceramic object as a space for exploring the relationship between form, rhythm, and surface. Her work is informed by geometric forms and by patterns inspired by Middle Eastern art reinterpreted through a personal visual language.
In her practice, geometric forms embody a vital energy and a universal creative presence. Geometry becomes a way of reflecting on balance, as well as on the aspiration toward perfection. Although perfection remains unattainable, the artistic process is understood as a continuous search and a conscious movement toward an ideal of harmony.
In parallel, following the completion of her studies, the artist developed the concept of the “self-returning line,” a form of expression derived from doodle practice, emerging in a context of isolation and reflection. These fluid lines explore the surface of the ceramic object before inevitably closing back onto their point of origin, generating organic structures based on continuity and return.
For Dumi Khan, this line represents a free and intuitive movement of exploration, as well as the idea of returning to the self. The interventions take the form of engraved reliefs, glaze applications, or direct ink drawing on unglazed surfaces. In this context, the line becomes an element that shapes and animates the ceramic surface, creating a dialogue between spontaneity and structure.
